Are you in the Mix?

Hey guys! Are you in the Mix? If not, you should check out this new monthly event. The first round started on July 1st, but since we are about mid-month now, I thought I would remind (or inform) you about an event that brings traffic back to mainstores.

Hair: Besom~Petal (Mix item)
Hat: Ghee Summer Hat (old fair gift)
Skin:Glam Affair – Alice – SummerParty – Jamaica 01
Eyes: IKON Promise Eyes  – Nymph
Necklace:  {Indyra} Alexandria Necklace
Outfit: GizzA – Meimei Dress [Floral]
Bag: *{Junbug}* Cute Coin Purse Blue (recolored)
Shoes: {Livalle} Ganymede -Slingback Wedges (pink)

Mix has a hud that will help you go from store to store, and it also tells you who is participating at a glance. You can get the hud from marketplace, or maybe you have received one already from a participating store.

As you can see, there are three categories – Sale, New, and Exclusive. Besom has come out with this new hair this month called Petal, and it is available now at the store. Make sure you make a note of the sale and exclusive items, for the item itself may not be there at all at the end of the month.

One critique I have heard about the hud is that it has many scripts and takes up significant memory at “87 scripts. 5.56MB memory.” I can confirm the 87 scripts, and it dropped my FPS from 75 to 13. It made my friend crash repeatedly. So to play it safe, I would just go to Eloquence or Seraphim and grab the links from there. The coordinators for this event should look into this, for this is a significant issue.

The great thing about this event is that hopefully it will show designers that they should create for their main stores as well as numerous events. Sometimes the instant gratification of earning a quick Linden is a strong pull, but what happens if events shut down? Or, if you want to have a sale at your store, but haven’t gotten around to setting out old event items? Even if the demand is not there at the stores at this time,  you should always take care of your homebase because you own it.

So, are YOU in the Mix? You still have time ! ^^

8 Things I Hate about Second Life Shopping Events

As some of you may know, I’m getting back into the routine of things after I had to leave SL for a time. I’ve been checking out various shopping events, and I have noticed something. At about every other event I’ve been to, people stand right at the landing point. At one event people were on voice chatting. If I did not have “Fly” enabled, it would have had been hard for me to “land” onto the sim. When I asked some people about this phenomenon, they basically said, “Oh this is becoming a thing at events…to be seen”. Really now? I don’t know about you guys, but I go to shopping events to shop, not to be seen.

Hair: ~Tableau Vivant~ Shiny hair – Naturals II
Skin: Glam Affair – Cleo – Jamaica  +  CLEO – lipstick – 20
Jacket & Shirt: GizzA – Spiked Leather Jacket [Ice Peach] (at On9)
Pants: coldLogic pants – tibbs.plum
Shoes: {Livalle} Europa -Slingback Platform Wedges- Sunset (for Wayward Hunt)
Shades: * S O R G O – Alcaz / GOLD

Location: Mayfair

What bothers me about shopping events?

1. People standing at the landing point

Now, I’m reasonable. Sometimes you get caught up in trying to rez where you are walking before you take those couple of steps away from the landing point. Other times, your computer might freeze, and you are unable to do anything – never mind trying to move out of the way. But if people are carrying out a conversation right in the landing point, there should be people there to give them a bit of… incentive to get out of the way. Again – I’m reasonable, because this is not always possible. But there was one event where someone appeared to be away at the landing point. I went there before I went to sleep for the night, and went back in the morning. The person was still there.

2. No flying

There is an event out now that is simwide, and yet people are unable to fly around it. When I saw that, I tp’ed right out. This event does not seem to have any event website coverage, and I really don’t feel like reading a ton of blogs just to see what is being offered at this event. If your design requires that people do not fly around to see what is being offered, then perhaps you need to reconsider your layout. There has been only a few events that I’ve been to where not being able to fly did not make a negative impact on event. If you require privacy in the upper (or lower) regions of the sim, then maybe take the event someplace else? Make it smaller? I don’t know, but in 2015, this should not be an issue.

3. No coverage on products sold

Let’s face it – the reason why so many people are participating in events nowadays is because of cross-promotion. Merchants have even stopped making regular releases in their stores because they make more at events (even though this is not such a good idea). If the event does not make arrangements to showcase what is being featured, then why go to the event?

Within 6 months after I came on Second Life, I had learned how to look on feeds and individual blog sites to find out who had blogged the hunt items for Hunt XYZ. With major coverage sites such as Seraphim and Eloquence, there should be no reason why in 2015 an event doesn’t have pictures of the items that are exclusive to the event. The easiest way to do this is to have the stores in the event submit a vendor picture that clearly shows what is being sold, and to remind them that the better the picture looks, the more likely people will want to come check it out. But don’t go too far and change the product completely…

4. Lag due to excessive sim decorations

This is a hard one, and now that I have my new computer, I understand better why some event coordinators do this. Depending on your graphics card, you may be able to handle lots of high rez/high scripted items without your computer slowing down or crashing. So sometimes, people get carried away in the visionary aspect of the event, and not think that the average person in SL may not have a $2,000+ computer to render everything in an ideal fashion. There have been times where I get early access to an event, and it’s laggy with less than 10 avatars on the sim. I think all events should be optimized to handle large crowds in a reasonable fashion.

A good way to see if lag is due to your computer unable to handle a lot of objects or if the sim is at fault is to check the sim’s time dilation. This can be found under Statistics.

According to Second Life’s wiki,

“Time dilation is a method the server uses to cope with simulator lag. Physics and script generated lag can result in time dilation. Time dilation slows script time & execution. When time dilation is zero script execution halts.”

How does this affect you? The lower the number is, the slower you will move on that sim. If the time dilation on the sim is 0.5, you will move at half the speed you are normally accustomed to.

At the place where I work, some potential renters complained that the sim was laggy. I personally didn’t really feel it, but when I checked the time dilation, it was 0.7-0.8, which indicated that the sim was not that great (it should be at least 0.9, if not closer to 0.99). It turned out that there were griefer objects on the sim that had excessive scripts, which lagged the sim.

5. Unable to find items due to the event’s choice of layout

A while back, I went to an event which had no maps of the sim and where the stores were located, and no fly was enabled. After a while I gave up in frustration because I could not find anything. I think it’s crucial that the event should be set up in a way where people can find stores with relative ease. There shouldn’t be “dead spots” where if a person doesn’t turn just so, he or she completely miss like 5 stores. If you are going to do that, at least enable fly so that shoppers have a chance.

6. Changing the price (upselling)

When it comes to brand recognition, price of the products sold in a business is one of several components involved. For instance, many of us know that a pair of jeans in Old Navy, The Gap, and Banana Republic will be at different price points, just based on the name alone. If a pair of Old Navy pants was suddenly marked up to the same price as Banana Republic, people would not buy them, and would probably feel like they were being ripped off. But in order to feel like this, you would have to already be familiar with their brand. The same applies in Second Life.

Let’s say Store Y sells dresses that normally go for $L300 at their main store. At Event Z, the dress is being sold for L$450. The dress doesn’t seem to have substantial detail that would warrant a significant price change. A few months later, you go check out Store Y to see what’s new, and the L$450 dress is now $L300. Raising the price on something doesn’t automatically mean it has more quality.

Another scenario: Store X will sell a dress for L$70 at Discount event A, $L140 at Event B, and $L250 at Event C in a 6-week period. Where do you go to buy the dress? Or rather, where would you rather buy the dress, and how would you feel if you paid top Linden at an event for something that was cheaper last month at another event?
To me, this sort of practice devalues your item – what is it really worth? For those who say “Whatever people are willing to pay”, just give consumers a choice at which price point they want to pay, and see the true answer.

7. Similar items

Everyone has the right to look at real life trends in fashion and come up with ideas for Second Life creation. But when too many people get inspired by the same trend, it can get repetitive. Especially when the designers are being featured in events within the same period of time.

For instance, let’s say the hot trend right now in hair are ponytails. Stores A-E all debut their version of the side ponytail. All of them look great, and people might have their preferences due to quality and/or brand loyalty. Imagine if all of these stores were at the same – no, let’s say they were at different events within the same month. If you were looking for a center part ponytail, or a low ponytail, you may be out of luck if none of the designers did any additional releases at their main stores.

Now let’s say if three of these stores were at the same event. The average shopper may not realize that all of these stores had new ponytails for this particular month. But when they are all side by side, it would be hard not to notice. Sometimes people may go, “Hey! Store B copied store A’s design!” And thus, drama peruses.

8. Too many events!

I think it’s safe to say that everyone is feeling burnt out with the amount of events there are in Second Life. When the owner of Seraphim has to make this sort of announcement…

“Wow you guys, there are a TON TON TON of events coming in June, July and August. Just a general announcement…if you want Seraphim coverage and/or advertising during this time, please apply now. The creativity is super exciting, but it’s going to be so, so busy!! If you have an event or want advertising, please fill out the appropriate form on this page: Contact

…it pretty much says it all, don’t you think?

What are some of the things that annoy you at events? Feel free to leave a comment below!

When Opportunity Knocks

So, I’ve wanted to do blog posts with other bloggers for a while now. Earlier this month I was asked by Morgie to do a blog post with her. I’ve been reading So Hawt SL and been a fan for about 4 years now (and friends for about 3), so it was so cool when she messaged me inworld. I was at an Arcade yardsale (and you know how obsessed I get at the beginning of the Arcade month), and I dropped everything and ran home to get changed.

Flowery Perfume

Hey everyone! I have lots to share with you today…where to begin?

I’ll talk about something that I don’t normally focus on in my blog posts – using windlight/environmental settings to adjust your lighting in Second Life. You can use windlight to better illuminate your photos, or if you want to create a certain mood. For instance, if you want to take photos of a haunted house, you may want to use darker lighting vs a bright cheery one. Some bloggers choose to use mainly one windlight setting for photos, which gives their photos a distinctive, recognizable look. I’m not that kind of blogger – when you blog indoors, outdoors, casual, formal, fantasy, kinda photos, I think one windlight does not do your photos justice.

In SL Blogger Support, there was a blogger named Criistinaa Chau  who wanted opinions on how she was doing on her blog. Someone asked her what windlight did she use, and she said that she used Juicybomb’s settings. I wasn’t sure how I missed these – maybe because when Gogo put out this blog post I wasn’t really thinking about that yet during my blogging journey. The windlight that I am using is Gogo Hearts SL. I felt like it went well with the outfit that I have on today. One thing that Gogo said about windlights was this:

“A lot of people don’t know this, but the direction that your avatar faces matters when using a Windlight Setting made by someone else. When I am on a pose stand, my avatar is always facing SOUTH, and the blank prim background is behind me.”

I always suspected this, but after seeing how this photo came out…the proof is in the pudding (or photo).

Gizza is a store that I am very fond of, but yet I don’t find myself shopping there as often as I would like. Why? This is what happens – I get the note card from the group about their new releases. I get excited, but at the same time I’m still reading group notices, blogs, Facebook, and Seraphim SL. Because there are so many events lately, each with at least 10 stores that I’m clicking through Seraphim’s gallery to see what they have, Gizza gets lost in the shuffle. Until the next new release from them that is, and then the cycle happens again. Well, I put an end to that today 🙂 This is one of Gizza’s latest releases – Flowery Perfume. I like how there are several colors, changeable by a HUD.

Today is the last day for the elikatira hair sale – all single hair pack colors are only 99L. I got some cute hairs from there. I appreciate the sale lasting until I had recovered from last month’s Hair Fair ^^

Okay – that’s all from me! Until next time, happy shopping!

42 SL Groups Challenge!

sl-groups-meme_002How are you enjoying the summer?

Hey guys! I’m still not as inspired to blog about things. I did tweak my shape a bit, because I was tired of being just a wee bit too big for a S but M looks big on me around the waist.

Berry did a cool meme this week about Second Life groups, so I got semi-inspired to do a post ^^

1. Have you reached the 42 group limit?

No, but that’s because I leave 2 group slots open for temporary group slots.

 2.  Do you do a lot of group hopping to keep up with all the groups you want to stay a part of?

I don’t do a lot of it, but I do hop around if the store doesn’t have a subscriber group or if there is an event and the group will close to new membership at a certain point.

3.  What makes you want to join a group?

When I first started SL, I joined groups based on how much I liked their free items and group gifts. Also, if my friends had a “friends” or a “DJ” group, I would join that. After the groups expanded from 25 to 42, I was able to join groups that related to what I was interested in – blogging, modeling/fashion, as well as business related groups. So now, what makes me want to join a group is based on interest and whether it’s vital for me to be part of that group.

4.  A lot of store VIP groups have a group fee which you have to pay to join. How do you feel about paying group fees?

I don’t really like group fees. I remember when LL increased the number of group slots, a lot of stores suddenly had group fees. Some even put group fees and then gave no gifts or anything that would make me feel like a VIP group member. I feel if you aren’t offering anything extra, don’t make me pay $250-$300-$500-$1000L for empty group space so to speak.

Even though this could be answered in the next question, I’ll bring it up here to make a point. One of my good friends told me to join M.O.C.K Cosmetics, and I was like oh…but it’s $250L to join. However, she knew I had already owned some makeup from Mockie, and said there was a ton of makeup in the notices. So I said okay I’ll join, and I got like 10 items from notices alone. So just when I joined, the group fee paid for itself. Also, the chat is one of the most friendliest group of people that I have ever seen. That is an example of a good V.I.P. group.

5. Name a few groups that you are a part of that you feel everyone should look into joining and share your reasons behind that.

* Chop Zuey – I love their jewelry, and you get several quality pieces a month. Quality meaning that these are items that are sold in the store, and not just a rushed item that’s not fit to be sold. If you are female and don’t mind wearing men’s jewelry, then the gifts are even better. Even if you didn’t want to join their group, they have free items for non-members, but what Belle sometimes does is give 1-2 items of a set to non-members, and the rest to members. Don’t want to pay to get the whole set? Just join the group. The group fee is 350L to join.

* Artistry by Ejewelry store which has classic jewelry, and you get up to 3 customized jewelry sets for your rez day, which is sent out to everyone in the group. Right now there is a sale at the store, and it’s only 100L to join, so a very good time to join.

* Gos Boutique – you can get discounts on shoes, and excellent customer service. I see the group fee is 50L right now (it used to be free and then 500L when a group gift is available).

* Gizzaclothing store that has nice group gifts. I think it’s free…I remember at one time they tried to put a group price,  but changed it back. This is where I go when I want to give people a quick makeover – a lot of nice pieces that you can mix and match.

* M.O.C.K Cosmetics (for the reason I said above)

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

Hey everyone! Sorry I have not blogged in a bit, but things were busy, both in SL and in RL. Why so serious in that photo? I’ve been doing a lot of thinking, as well as making changes in how I want to participate in Second Life…

1. Last month I moved in SL – still living on the beach of course, but I’m in a much better environment. When i first got my own place, I wanted to have parties and have a great time. This year I will keep a healthy balance between work and fun.  I’ll talk about my adventures in  furniture shopping for the place on another post.

2.  I was a model in the Voluptia Lingerie fashion show, which was my first show in over a year. It really felt like 2 shows since we prepared for another show with a different sponsor, but the show was canceled. The experience was a refresher in runway modeling, and it has encouraged me to continuing pursing my goals for modeling.

3.   Over the summer I became marketing chair with a company that specializes in marketing innovative products that help business owners.  We have several things planned for this year and can’t wait for them to take place. However, this year I will take the time to work on my own projects. Helping people to make their own dreams come true is great, but it’s a different feeling when you are in the driver’s seat so to speak.

4. Blogging! WordPress has a cool end of the year report about your blog. Here is an excerpt of what it says:

“600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 4,800 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 8 years to get that many views.

In 2012, there were 80 new posts, growing the total archive of this blog to 126 posts. There were 350 pictures uploaded, taking up a total of 121 MB. That’s about 7 pictures per week.”

I am proud of my progress so far with blogging. One of my goals is to be more consistent in posting. It’s pretty obvious that the more content you have, the more visits you will get. I am really happy with the way my photos have been coming along.  However it can be a bit discouraging because it seems like if you don’t have the ability to enable shadows in SL, people won’t see your photos as being any good.

5. My inventory desperately needs to be cleaned out.  At 52, 346 items, I feel that is too much. My goal is to get between 30k – 31k items by going though everything and deleting old stuff. Also, by boxing up/deleting mesh sizes that I don’t need (XXS, L) I can get rid of stuff I don’t need as well.

I think this is all for now – a lot of things to think about and work on indeed. Until next time!
