As September 11th comes to an end, I think about what happened on this day 12 years ago.
I remember going over the Manhattan Bridge and seeing so much smoke in the sky. When the conductor said that a plane had crashed into one of the Twin Towers, some of the passengers as well as myself thought the pilot was an idiot for crashing into a building.
I remember arriving on campus and feeling numb as my friends filled me in on the events surrounding the plane crashing.
I remember all of us calling on cell phones, office phones, and as well as pay phones trying to account for our loved ones, and to let them know that we were okay.
I remember getting a ride home from Queens to Brooklyn because the MTA had suspended train and bus service due to the events, and how the roads were jammed packed full of cars, all desperate to get to their desired destinations.
I remember smelling the acrid smoke for weeks in Brooklyn, even though we were miles away from Ground Zero.
We should all cherish every day of our lives. It’s events like this that puts everything into perspective and helps us to remember what is important in life.
